Dreamrealm Kingdom
Dreamrealm Kingdom is a 2.5D fantasy ARPG inspired partly by FromSoftware's soulsborne games. Crucially though: I'm not trying to make a soulsborne game! I'm doing my own little freak thing.
I was initially inspired back in summer 2024 to make a small and simple little walking around 3D environment exploration game after watching illusory wall's video The Invisible Walls of Dark Souls 1 which delved into the details of Dark Soul's environment collision system. Since then, I've finished playing through the rest of the souls games and I have Opinions™.
Dreamrealm Kingdom is what if I made some of the most self-indulgent shit I could where I got to write a ton of weird fucked up little guys who you can talk to and help out while walking around and playing around with a combat build system that was built entirely on non-committal experimentation and environment exploration. These are some of my favourite things. I get to make something visually stylish and weird, force people to play in a 4:3 aspect ratio, and fill it with fucked up little guys. Maybe let you play matchmaker with them a little.
Here's some of the pervasive feelings and design choices I'm excited about exploring with it, especially in contrast to the soulsborne games:
- No locking yourself into a single build type with minimal opportunity to experiment.
- Non-hostile storytelling with lots of emphasis on characters and their relationship to each other and the environment.
- Optional asynchronous online multiplayer. Dark Souls has it, I want it, and it's magnitudes simpler and more fun to implement than the synchronous online multiplayer work that I've been doing for the last several years professionally.
- Not interested in mechanics that encourage you to do things that waste your time.
