Cat Counter...?

I have a cat counter! Every time I'm out on a walk or a skate or something and see a cat, I increment a cat counter on my phone. There were a couple places I used to keep my cat counter stats updated on the internet, but none exist anymore so this site will be the only place you can find it.

Each post will have a snapshot of my cat count at the time of publishing the post, and the site footer will have the current most up-to-date count.

There's some personal rules I have for when I increment the counter:

Cats seen through windows count, they don't have to be outside
Cats don't count if they're from where I was going to or leaving from and I already saw them while there
If I reach my destination and stay there for long enough that leaving feels like another distinct trip, then cats spotted on the first trip can be counted again
If there's plausible deniability that a cat I've seen is maaaybe a different cat than one I saw earlier, I count them
The point of this isn't to track any meaningful data other than some vague notion of little bits of happiness I get from cats when I'm out and about so all of this is fake and I do what I want :)

Javascript's disabled (extremely fair) so I can't show you the charts of my cats over the months, but I can describe them to you!

2026: 45 cats so far...

2025: 560 cats

Imagine a chart that's kinda shaped like Mount Celeste from the hit video game Celeste (2018), that's got one really big peak in the middle and then two smaller local peaks on either side. Highest count was 125 cats in June, and the lowest count was 6 cats in February.

2024: 375 cats

This chart's a bit all over the place, like a spikey terrain on an alien planet. The first 4 months are abnormally low, with a local peak of 20 cats in February, and then a decline to 9 cats in April. So many horrible things were happening those months lmao... BUT ANYWAYS the peak of 2024 was 78 cats in July, and the lowest was 8 cats in January.

2023: 323 cats

Nothin too special about 2023's chart! But it does look like a cat who's hiding behind something and all you can see are their little ears poking out above. The two months with the highest counts are May and October with 64 and 73 cat sightings respectively! Those are pretty far apart and there's a nice big smooth swoop in between them that really sells it hehe. The fewest sightings award goes to February because I was in Chicago for half of it and there were no cats around. Plenty of rats, tho.

2022: 522 cats

2022, the long loathed year... It was a pretty good year all things considered, it sure did give me a cat counter record that would take me 3 more years to beat. It's shaped kinda like a person laying on their back with their mouth open, screaming. Highest count was 101 in July, lowest was 0 in January (it was cold). Fun fact but June has the 2nd lowest count with only TWO cat sightings. This is Chicago's fault again, but I got to see so many rats that I started a rat counter.

2021: 217 cats (late Aug-Dec)

This chart's a little fucky-wucky cause I only started counting cats on August 28, with only a third of the year left to go! I saw 121 cats in September which was a per-month record that would take me 3.5 years to beat. Lowest was 6 cats in December which is pretty average.
